EL PROYECTO

Indígenas Urbanos explora la experiencia de migración de las gentes indígenas de la Amazonía colombiana a la ciudad. A la par con el resto del mundo, también la mayoría de los pobladores de la selva amazónica ya viven hoy en centros urbanos.

A partir de diferentes aproximaciones multimedia, este proyecto pretende adentrarse por los diferentes aspectos que tienen que ver con ser indígena en el contexto urbano de la globalización.

A partir de un corto documental de 8 minutos, en el que se retrata a una familia en particular, se plantean varios aspectos que sirven de introducción a un diálogo abierto a todos. Vemos identidades que se transforman, intercambios inesperados y finalmente una revisión del concepto tradicional de la cultura  indígena.

¿Qué ocurre cuando una familia como los Hernández se encuentra en una ciudad “de blancos” y empieza a desear ese mismo tipo de bienestar; electricidad, televisión, y un cierto poder adquisitivo?

Esta es una historia habitada por múltiples experiencias: el difícil acceso a la tierra para cultivar, la situación de provisionalidad de muchas familias viviendo en barrios declarados “no aptos” para vivir, así como de una creciente revalorización de la cultura indígena como propia y diferencial.

Aspectos que se abordan de forma multidisciplinaria; documentalistas, antropólogos, periodistas y geógrafos trabajando conjuntamente a partir de distintos materiales. La Web Indigenasurbanos.info reúne los variados frutos de una experiencia que sigue abierta y creciendo; vídeos, fotos, artículos y sonidos originales que pretenden documentar, pensar y revisar críticamente nuestro presente.

Indígenas Urbanos es un proyecto documental absolutamente independiente, fruto del amor y la pasión por un mundo diverso y otro. Por eso encuentra su nido en Internet, un medio libre, flexible y abierto al mundo.

It is said that the Amazon rainforest is the lungs of the world, but it consumes as much oxygen as it produces. It is said to be an abundant fertile land, but its acidic and sandy soil make it the most difficult land to harvest. Moreover, the Amazon is thought of as predominantly rural, and yet the majority of people live in concentrated urban areas. Just as the rest of the world, most inhabitants of the Amazonia basin live now in a city.

“The Urban Indigenous Project” explores the Amazon’s native peoples’ experience of migration from the Colombian rainforest to the city. Using different media, this project seeks takes a look at the indigenous experience in the urban context of globalization.

In “a slice of life” video we meet the Hernandez family. The film looks at their transforming identities as we see them experiencing unexpected cross-cultural exchanges that force us to review the conventional concept of indigenous societies. This 8-minute documentary serves as introduction to kick of an open dialogue in different mediums.

What happens when a family, like the Hernandez’s, lives in a “white” city and starts desiring the same kind of living standards of the Western societies – electricity, television, and a higher consumer purchasing power?

This is a story inhabited by countless experiences: people have no longer access to the land for farming, families who live trapped in a temporary situation waiting to be moved from unincorporated areas and children who no longer learn indigenous languages. And despite all, native people are increasingly reassessing indigenous culture as their own and differential.

The complexity of this process is addressed in a multidisciplinary manner; documentary filmmakers, anthropologists, journalists and geographers work together using different materials. The Indigenasurbanos.info website is the meeting point of this experience’s diverse fruits and the site still remains alive and growing. Through videos, photos, articles and original sounds “The Urban Indigenous Project” seeks to document, think and critically review our present time.

As an independently produced platform, The Urban Indigenous is the fruit of love and passion for the other and diverse world. Therefore it finds its nest on the Internet, a free and flexible medium open to interactivity and the world.
